The study, titled AWARE (AWAreness during REsuscitation), was launched earlier this month by the Human Consciousness Project of the University of Southampton, a program responsible for uniting an international cartel of physicians and scientists and physicians who are interested in delving into the human consciousness, brain, and clinical death.

Aware is being supervised by Dr. Sam Parnia, an expert in the field of consciousness during clinical death; Dr. Peter Fenwick; and University of Southampton Professors Robert Peveler and Stephen Holgate. An 18-month pilot phase of the program at selected hospitals throughout the UK has proved to be successful, so the study has been expanded to include other additional UK medical facilities and hospitals on mainland Europe and in North America.

"Contrary to popular perception," Dr. Parnia explains, "death is not a specific moment. It is a process that begins when the heart stops beating, the lungs stop working and the brain ceases functioning - a medical condition termed cardiac arrest, which from a biological viewpoint is synonymous with clinical death.

"During a cardiac arrest, all three criteria of death are present. There then follows a period of time, which may last from a few seconds to an hour or more, in which emergency medical efforts may succeed in restarting the heart and reversing the dying process. What people experience during this period of cardiac arrest provides a unique window of understanding into what we are all likely to experience during the dying process."

Recent independent research studies have shown that approximately 10-20% of people who experience cardiac arrest and clinical death report being able to have memories and well structured and lucid thoughts. Some also recall details of events that occurred during the near death experience.
